Is it shameless to hope a certain bilingual iPaulonesian will translate this for me and leave a comment? Hmmm. Regardless, I won’t let it stop me from posting this image from the Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo, HI. I was drawn to photograph several of these stone whatever-they-ares. The contrast of the dark, kanji lettering and the textured stone really drew my eye. |

Sorry, stuff like this is usually some old proverb or ancient text. Way out of my league. Also, since it is ‘all’ kanji there is an equal chance it is Chinese and not Japanese at all. I could get my kanji dictionary out and tell you what each character means but that would run the risk of a ‘literal’ translation and could miss the context completely.
Very cool pic though, I really like it too.

Ok, so, it’s definitely Japanese. My curiosity got the best of me and I started to look up the characters. The top right char I can’t really see very well so I’m not sure about it. The closest I can come for the whole thing is “Administrative Chairman Catch Government” See what I mean about ‘literal translation’? It doesn’t make any sense. When I was in Japan I would ask native Japanese to translate things like this all the time and they usually had a hard time unless it was a well know saying etc.
